Elementary and middle school children meet up at the Galax Recreation Center’s fourth floor gymnasium after school for fun activities and homework help.

The recreation center’s After School Activity Program is a partnership between the center and Galax schools. On Monday through Friday during school semesters, children are picked up from schools at 3 p.m., and brought to the center where they stay until 6 p.m.
The rec department offers supervised programs for children from grades Pre-K through seventh grade. Kids are fed healthy snacks and helped with their homework, and engage in a number of fun activities such as games in the gym, swimming, outdoor activities (weather permitting), movies and Nintendo Wii games.
On some Fridays, the children go on local field trips to places like Oldtown Pottery, Twin County Cinema III and the New River Trail.
The program is available throughout the school year, excluding teacher workdays, holidays, inclement weather or other scheduled closings. A similar all-day program is available for students during summer months.
Registration costs are $37 per week, with special rates if there is more than one child in the same household. Registrants are given a special rate on youth swimming lessons if registered while the child is in the after school program.
The Galax Recreation Center is located at 601 South Main Street in downtown Galax. For more information, call (276) 236-3218 or visit www.galaxparks-rec.com.
