A 24-year-old Mount Airy, N.C., resident was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after wrecking his pickup truck in the Baywood area of Grayson County on July 4.

According to Virginia State Trooper Jessie Tilson, Morgan Butler was speeding in his Chevrolet along Pleasant Grove Road near U.S. 58 when he lost control, veered off the right side of the road, plunged down an embankment and hit a tree. Tilson said the accident occurred around 6:15 p.m.

Butler was able to crawl from the vehicle on his own and answer questions when the Independence Volunteer Rescue Squad showed up. Nonetheless, the Galax Volunteer Fire Department was summoned to create a helicopter landing zone at Baywood Elementary School for Butler’s transportation, shortly after 6:45 p.m., according to Tilson.

No information was available about his condition on Monday.
