HILLSVILLE — Police have arrested a 50-year-old Craig County man in connection with an Aug. 6 robbery at Grayson National Bank in Hillsville.

Hillsville police identified the man as Richard Donald Hawes of New Castle.

Hillsville officers traveled to New Castle, acting on information gathered Tuesday evening, according to a news release.

The suspect in the robbery wore a cap, large sunglasses and a bandanna to hide his face, but witnesses provided a detailed description of the pickup truck involved.

Authorities, including members of the Craig County Sheriff's Office and the Virginia State Police, executed a search warrant at Hawes' New Castle home. Items from the residence, as well as a 1990 Isuzu truck, have been seized.

After appearing before a magistrate in Craig County, Sgt. James Alderman and Officer David Walls brought Hawes to Hillsville.

The pickup truck in question was towed back.

Hawes is being held in the New River Valley Regional Jail without bond pending his first appearance in Carroll County General District Court.
