Area cross country teams post strong showings

 BRISTOL –– Grayson County and Carroll County both finished among the top seven in both the boys’ and girls’ team standings Thursday at the Randy Smith Classic at Sugar Hollow Park.

Grayson’s girls led the way with their second-place finish in the 12-team, 3-mile race. Emma Wyatt finished fifth overall in 21 minutes, 11 seconds, Hayley Reavis was 11th, Mary Beth Cunningham 14th, Olivia Wyatt 21st and Natalie Ruiz 49th.

James River won the girls’ title with 47 points, followed by Grayson (77) and host John Battle (106). Carroll County was seventh, led by Kenzie Marshall in ninth place.

Grayson was fifth and Carroll seventh in the boys race, which included 22 teams and 166 runners.

Tyler Pauley paced Grayson County with his 12th-place effort in 17:20 and Adam Wyatt was 19th. Freshman Tyler Barrett led Carroll County, finishing 25th.

Josh Goodman of Bland won a tight three-way race to the finish to win in 15:59, and Sullivan East, Tenn., won the team competition.

Sophie Webb of Carroll won the girls’ JV race by more than two minutes and Grayson’s Vanessa Ponce was 11th.


Galax’s girls placed fifth and the Tide boys finished among the top half of the field of 22 teams in the Greensboro Invitational Sept. 29 at Hagan Stone Park.

Ashley Jordan paced the girls in the rainy, muddy 3.1-mile race, placing 13th in 21:28. Lindsey Ayers was 26th.

Running without their No. 4 man, Galax’s boys placed 11th in the 24-team, 158-runner field. Dustin Matthews, Chandler Quesenberry and Isaac Jordan all posted top-20 times for Galax, finishing in 15th, 19th and 20th places, respectively. 


Carroll Co. 3, Abingdon 0: The Cavaliers won their ninth straight match and improved to 3-0 in the SWD with a 25-9, 25-20, 25-14 win Thursday in Abingdon.

Jessica Sheek led the way with 11 kills and Megan Alderman put up 10 assists and had 10 digs for Carroll (10-3). Eustacia Smith and Autumn Hill combined for 10 kills for the Cavaliers.

Grayson Co. 3, Bland Co. 2: Madison Shupe and Camryn McGrady combined evenly on 18 kills as the Blue Devils took a 25-12, 25-23, 25-16 win Thursday in Bland.

Autumn Halsey added nine digs for Grayson, which improved to 12-1 overall, 7-0 in the MED.

Galax 3, Ft. Chiswell 0: The Maroon Tide kept within striking distance of MED leader Grayson County with the easy win Thursday in Max Meadows.

Galax allowed seven total points in the first and third sets of the 25-3, 25-15, 25-4 win.

Susan Davis fired seven aces and had 26 assists for Galax (13-2, 6-1) and Morgan Neff put away eight kills and also had seven aces.
