WISE –– Mikaela Anders joined a select group of UVa.-Wise volleyball players during the Highland Cavaliers’ 3-0 win over West Virginia Tech on Oct. 27.
Anders recorded the 1,000th kill of her career in the match, reaching a milestone that tops what has already been an award-filled career for the junior middle hitter.
The 6-foot-1 Anders was selected to the Appalachian Athletic Conference all-freshman team in 2008 while also garnering first-team all-conference status in both her freshman and sophomore seasons.
The Grayson County High School graduate has been a force for the Cavaliers at the net throughout her career. In 2008, Anders was second on the team with 300 kills before leading the team with 386 kills last year as a sophomore. As a junior, Anders posted a team-best 405 kills en route to collecting the 1,000th kill of her career.
By accomplishing the milestone, Anders became just the third player in UVa.-Wise history to achieve the mark. She also became just the third UVa.-Wise player to achieve 400 or more kills in a season.
Anders’ best week of the season was during a three-win stretch in late October in which she led the team to victories over West Virginia Tech, Tennessee Wesleyan and Virginia Intermont by totaling 58 kills, 10 blocks and 20 digs with a hitting percentage of .522.
The Cavaliers ended their season at 12-22 with a 3-0 loss to Campbellsville University last Monday in the Mid-South Conference tournament.
