HILLSVILLE — Virginia State Police have been looking into a report of an alleged assault involving the Hillsville police chief while off-duty.
“We’re conducting an investigation, but we can’t make any comment on an investigation,” said Lt. J.J. Daniels, stationed at the Wytheville Virginia State Police Office.

Police will consult with the Carroll County commonwealth’s attorney at the conclusion of the investigation, he said.
Chief Greg Bolen is on vacation at present, according to Hillsville Mayor Greg Crowder.
When contacted by The Gazette, Bolen declined to comment about the situation.
This incident reportedly took place at a neighbor’s house where Bolen spent part of New Year’s Eve.
Town officials had heard about the alleged altercation, which involved minor injuries. “The official response from the council is we’re aware of the situation, but we have not been informed by anybody of any charges or any wrong-doing at this time,” Crowder said.
The mayor said he did not want to make further public statements until after he hears what the Virginia State Police have to say.
