HILLSVILLE –– Abingdon opened with a scoring flurry and went on to hand Carroll County an 8-0 defeat in a girls’ Southwest District soccer match Tuesday at Tommy Thompson Field.

The Falcons (7-2) got a goal every two minutes, including two by Kara Garrett, for the match’s first eight minutes and took a 6-0 lead into the half.

Carroll County’s best chance for a goal came when, with the Cavaliers down 4-0, Kelsea Utt sent a long pass into the Abingdon zone. A Falcon played the ball from on the ground while in the box and was whistled for the infraction, setting up a penalty kick for Utt.

Utt’s attempt struck the crossbar and returned straight to her but her rebound attempt was high.

Garrett finished with four goals for the Falcons, who outshot the Cavaliers 34-3, including 22 shots on goal. Lauren Morelock added a goal and three assists.

Cavalier goalkeepers Cassie Frazier and Rose Farmer combined to make 14 saves, nine by Frazier.
