On Sept. 11, the first-ever 9/11 Remembrance Walk will be held in observance of the 11th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks. Twin County Funerals, along with representatives of the Galax Police Department, Galax Volunteer Fire Department and Galax/Grayson EMS will host the event.
“We want the community to come out and support this event,” says Stephanie Rinehart, director of Twin County Funerals. “This is an important event, not only because of the 9/11 tragedy, but because we want to support the day-to-day sacrifices of our police, firemen and others who work hard keep our community safe.”
The walk will begin at 8:15 a.m., starting at the Galax Police Department headquarters on North Main Street, followed by stops at the Galax/Grayson EMS Department on Oldtown Street and the Galax Fire Department on Grayson Street. A special ceremony and wreath hanging is scheduled for each station.
At 8:46 a.m., the exact time that the first plane hit the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 2001, the walk will begin with the ringing of a bell.
Participants in the walk will include members of the local police, fire, emergency services and emergency management departments. The walk will be lead with a police and fire department honor guard, bagpiper and wreath bearers, and will be followed by a motorcade.
Confirmed speakers for this event include Galax Mayor C.M. Mitchell and Tina Cornett, EMS community outreach coordinator. Other speakers to be confirmed include representatives of the Galax Police Department and a representative of the Galax Fire Department, along with their chaplain.
Special contributors to this event are the VFW posts in Hillsville, Grayson and Sparta.
