After winning five district games by a combined six runs, the Blue Devils couldn’t overcome five errors and suffered just its third Mountain Empire District loss in more than a decade, falling to Narrows 9-4 Wednesday night at Calfee Park.

Grayson County still controlled its own destiny in the MED race but needed a win Thursday at Bland County to secure its 17th consecutive regular season championship.

The Blue Devils (9-7 overall, 6-1 district) had rallied from a 7-1 deficit the day before in beating Galax 9-8 (see Round-up, below), but couldn’t pull it off two days in a row. Grayson’s defense collapsed early, allowing Narrows (6-10, 3-4) to score five unearned runs in taking a 7-1 lead after two.

Jessup Lambert walked to lead off the game and scored on one of six wild pitches by Green Wave starter Corey Lowe, but Narrows unloaded for five runs in the bottom of the first on three hits and one costly error. Tyler Wilson doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice, and Mark Martin gave Narrows the lead for good with a RBI single. A misplayed two-out ground ball allowed one run to score, and Cory Perdue followed with a two-run single for the quick 5-1 lead.

Wilson walked to lead off the second and Josh Collins’ sacrifice bunt resulted in two throwing errors, allowing Wilson to score. Lowe lifted a sacrifice fly to plate Collins as the lead grew to 7-1.

Lambert walked and eventually scored again on a Lowe wild pitch in the top of the third, but the Wave’s Ryan Dunford got the run back in the bottom of the inning when he doubled to deep centerfield, knocking in Jake Craft.

Grayson County started getting to Lowe in the fourth. Ethan Hash took a heater in the back and Zack Hill walked. A pitch to the backstop moved the runners up and both scored on a throwing error, the Green Wave’s only miscue of the night, trimming the gap to 8-4.

Once again, Narrows made up a run in its next turn at bat when Martin singled to drive in Collins for the final margin.

Grayson County went fairly quietly the final three innings, managing just a pair of walks after the fourth against Lowe, who finished with a three-hit complete game, striking out six, walking seven and uncorking six wild pitches.

Dunford and Martin led the Green Wave with two hits each, Dunford with a pair of doubles.

The game marked Grayson’s first district defeat since the Blue Devils opened the 2005 MED schedule with a loss at Narrows.
