HILLSVILLE — Ten people, six of them children, had injuries as the result of an Aug. 5 multiple-vehicle accident at U.S. 58 west of Airport Road.
Seven of the injured were transported to Twin County Regional Hospital after the incident involving four vehicles, according to First Sgt. Mike Musser of the Virginia State Police.
None of the injuries were thought to be life-threatening.
It happened when Debra Smith of Galax, driving a 1993 Chevy van rear-ended a 1991 Ford Explorer driven by Mitzee Mangan of Hillsville.
The collision forced the Explorer into the rear of a 1994 Chevy Blazer, driven by Julie Leagan of Galax.
Both of these vehicle got pushed into a 2009 Dodge station wagon, driven by Lisa Garcia of Corry, Pa.
Each vehicle other than Smith's had three injured occupants, Musser said. The children injured in the accident ranged from 3 to 13 years of age.
All four vehicles had a combined damage total ranging from $10,000 to $15,000.
Musser charged Smith with reckless driving.
Personnel from the Hillsville Fire Department, Carroll Fire Rescue, Pipers Gap and the Carroll Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene.
The accident blocked the eastbound lanes of 58 for about 30 minutes before emergency workers could get one lane reopened, Musser said.
